Business Owners Beware Counterfeit Currency

During the past week, several counterfeit $100.00 bills have been passed at several businesses in Ocean City, MD and Pocomoke City, MD. These counterfeit bills have the same serial number of “HB91785592M.” Businesses on the Eastern Shore are encouraged to educate their employees on counterfeit money and how deceptive its appearance can be at first glance. Counterfeit detection pens are not always successful in detecting counterfeit currency. Business owners and employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the holograms, watermarks, as well as the placement of the security features on authentic money. A common scenario involving counterfeit currency involves the suspect making a small purchase and paying with a large-denomination bill, which is later determined to be counterfeit. If any business owner/employee encounters a counterfeit bill, regardless of the denomination, please report it to the police. If any agency has any additional cases pertaining to the counterfeit $100.00 bills with the aforementioned serial number, please contact the Ocean City Police Department at (410) 723-6641.
