Washington High principal replaced abruptly
Deborah Gates, dgates@dmg.gannett.com 3:05 p.m. EST March 8, 2016

After almost three years at the helm, Sidney Hankerson has been replaced as principal at Washington Academy & High School, he confirmed Tuesday.

Hankerson was previously an administrator at the Princess Anne high school until he was transferred to lead the Somerset Promise Academy alternative school in Marion Station. He returned to Washington as principal in July 2013 after the controversial Somerset County school board decision to move former principal William Johnson to the Promise Academy.

On Tuesday, March 8, Hankerson confirmed he was on leave from the principalship, but would not comment on circumstances. He did describe his removal from the post as "abrupt."

Hankerson also said he was informed of the reorganization several days ago by John Gaddis, Somerset County public schools superintendent.

"I will miss the students and the staff," Hankerson said. "I enjoyed my time there. I wish the very best for the transition team, and will do everything I can to help with the transition."

Somerset County Board of Education spokesman Leo Lawson would not discuss Hankerson's departure from Washington High, saying only that Germaine Richardson becomes acting principal effective Wednesday, March 9. Richardson is one of two assistant principals at the high school.

Lawson also announced Chad Moletress would continue at Washington as an assistant principal. He added Matt Brady, a physical education teacher at Deal Island Elementary School, steps in as acting assistant principal at Washington.

When asked about the circumstances of Hankerson's departure and the duration of his absence, Lawson would not comment.

"This is a personnel matter and there is nothing I can share about it," Lawson said. "Right now, a person is in an acting capacity, and that is Germaine Richardson. The time frame, I don't know."

Stakeholders received a letter late last week announcing a reorganization at the high school that included a change in leadership. Lawson acknowledged that parents received a letter, but would not comment further, saying only that "the county has provided the appropriate leadership."

"As we move through the year we are always adjusting, refining and evaluating where we are as a system," the letter states. "It is never easy to make changes especially mid-year, however, sometimes circumstances call for that change to occur."
