Woodson Elementary Bullying Issues On School Bus
I have heard from several parents that have children that go to Woodson elementary that there is a severe issue with bullying from a certain child on one of the buses. One parent had their son dragged to the back of the bus and had their head stomped on and kicked multiple times by an older student on this bus. This seems to be an ongoing issue with this particular older student to the point several parents have switched Schools just to keep their children from being the victims of this bullying.
The penalty for this has to be more than missing recess or losing lunch, this is a serious behavioral problem. These children being bullied like this are being traumatized.

lock his ass up and charge him like an adult.
It is because the school gets a grant for being safe. The irony is that the principal doesn't want to discipline the kids for fear of losing her grant and, as a result, the school is more dangerous.
This is a serious issued folks, why is this child allowed to continually allowed to get away with this type of behavior it’s absurd. The schools need to come up with a zero tolerance bullying program. If it happens the kid is out! No ifs and or buts. Also I believe that the parents of this child need to be investigated as well, if you have a child that is exhibiting this type of behavior in my opinion they learned it from somewhere and see it as acceptable. It would be sad to see this handle in a vigilantly type way, but parents and getting tired in Somerset County of the school systems doing nothing and sitting by while this happens to children!
It's ridiculous that the school officials let this go on and turn their head. And the parents of the bully are just as bad! Apple didn't fall far from the tree.
If children of all ages are not held accountable for their actions then they will have no morals and will not ever learn respect for other chikdren or adults and more than likly grow up to be an abusive individual. I also agree if they are capable of doing this, it is a learned behavorial problem, and the parents should be investigated...but some parent has to step up to the plate and file criminal charges or it will never stop! If it were my child I would not hesitate...I would be in that principals office everyday filing a complaint...Then I would call the police and Social Sevices...this BS has to stop and it's stops with the parents.! They all need mental help..!
Now the school officials can not officially say they were not informed.A certain person in SBY who was just charged with attempted murder was just like this kid when he was in school.Even then we said it would be a miracle if he did'nt eventually kill someone.
Surprised you're not bashing Joe today, he got you skeered too?
3:10 yea I'm terrified. If you haven't figured it out already there is one thing Joe Albero needs to survive and that's attention. He is a non entity and has zero bearing on real life here on the shore he lives in his fantasy world. I don't even pay any attention to him anymore
Can someone please give me a hint as to which bus this is? My child rides the bus and I have not heard of any serious issues but I would like to know if there is something going on!!
I'd have no problem throwin' a $50 bill to a BIGGER kid to teach this kid a life-long lesson.
If that's breaking the law, so be it..I'll take my chances with a jury of my peers who are sick of it.
Bus 1
Call msp and report the assault. I guarantee something will be done.
This child, whoever they are, needs to be pulled out of the school system and put somewhere, far from anyone else, adult and children alike. It's obvious this child has some issues if they're dragging kids and stomping on their heads and if something isn't done, they're going to end up causing serious injuries to someone or even worse, kill someone. Also, the parents of the child needs to be slapped for allowing a child like this is even exist. Someone people just piss me off.
Are you talking about the whopping $500 grant that any MD school can get for meeting criteria set by the state. Do you really think anyone would fret over $500?
This definitely is an issue for bus 1. My son is autistic & we had trouble since kindergarten. The school doesn't do anything about the bullying issues even when they saw the tapes & questioned the other children. I finally had enough & provide my own transportation for him. It's probably best for all parents who have kids that ride this bus take them off of it or find a more disciplined driver. My son was supposed to sit right behind the driver & hardly ever was!
I think the person who is bullying these children should be taken to a trauma center so they can see what happens to someone who has a severe head injury which apparently he could have caused if he kicked the child in the right spot. why is he still on the bus ? make him walk
It really upsets me that the administration (not just at Woodson) is so concerned about the "numbers" as far as suspensions and discipline go. Many would be surprised at the kind of behavior that is tolerated and swept under the rug in our schools.
I have two children enrolled in Woodson elementary, and the only problems I have encountered, and a number of other parents as well, is the lack of discipline from the Administration. The teachers are great and resourceful, but the bullying issue gets swept underneath the rug. I have had to deal with a student on the bus bullying my kids, and the current principal and vice principals don't do anything about it. I'm sorry, but losing recess and eating lunch in the office doesn't do anything to resolve the issue. What ever happened to children being suspended, or even expelled. This issue really needs to be taken seriously. I, a concerned parent, is very scared for my child's safety, since the current administration won't step up and act.
Amen we get assaulted, cussed, threatened, stolen from, my things destroyed but these types of students only miss a monthly incentive or get ISS? I am supposed to make each day a new day after being kicked, stolen from & cussed? Go ahead DR MILES what are we going to restructure now, since you'll did such a fabulous job with state plan! U reap what u sow lady, what growth and developments have you made? I see a growing gap in student respect for teachers & staff members and classmates because they know nothing serious will ever be done or happen! The worst kids get the most privileges & monetary/toy/treats! The good kids see it and recognize it's unfairness, all the while doing their best to earn eagle wings, crab cash, wild cat cash or sand dollars to buy the same prize the bad kid got at overinflated priced carts or school stores? What are we teaching both the good or bad? Being bad gets me things & earning it is a double edge sword? Hmmmmm???
To the person who posted about the kiddo who lost his eye to cancer, while the majority of what you did speak of is true it did not happen to the the little guy who lost his eye but rather to his big brother.
My child has had the same problems in this school. The principal told me they have procedures they have to follow and what did I want, that they can not take them out and tar and feather them and they are children. This was after my child talked about wanting to die because they didnt want to go to school. I filed charges and all that was done was the child was fingerprinted and put on report. As far as bus 1 goes my child was smacked on the butt and when I left a message for a return phone call I never got one. They need to start doing something about this problem instead of showing kids that it does no good to tell the office because they will not stand up for them
Do people think that teachers and principals just make up whatever discipline rules they want. We do have a boss called Maryland state dept of education. They're the schools' boss whether you agree with them or not. They recently hAd a document for public comment called "study of school disciplinary practices and proposed REGULATORY (laws) changes.".
I'll highlight some of things constraints that are
put on teachers and principals:
To meet commitments of closing achievement gap, graduate students and produce competitive workers, we reiterate that our belief is that students will be in school, not out of school.
Putting students out of school for long periods of time is a concern for us.
The frequency os suspensions also raises concerns. If a student is suspended more than 2x we have serious doubts that the suspension is a technique that is working.
Some have argued that suspensions remove disorderly students and deter students from misbehaving. Yet despite 2 decades of study, there is no evidence that suspension improves school safety.
We intend that expulsion stop unless there are serious extenuating circumstances that make total exclusion the only way to ensure safe schools.
And, Somerset has the highest suspension este in the county.
When was the last time a contributor to this blog looked for something GOOD to say about a school or a teacher? That's very frustrating! In what entity, community or business have you found a perfect environment? Our schools are a reflection of society. There are great things in schools and society and things that need work! It's a shame that mostly negative things are posted here.
Thank you 8:47. You took the words right off of my page. No one who is not in a school understands everything that is involved with discipline. It can be very frustrating but there are procedures that must be followed or there will be lawsuits. Did you know that part of making AYP in Maryland is connected to student attendance? Something that teachers and administrators have NO control over and parents don't think is important. Did you know that your students could be succeeding and passing the MSA every year but if attendance drops below 94%, it doesn't matter? Our schools could be taken over by MSDE. This includes suspensions.
No one is saying the system is perfect but it isn't as simple as you may think. School have rules, districts have rule, MSDE has rules and law enforcement has rules. They all have to be followed.
How about some parent volunteers to ride these buses? How about some parent volunteers in the classrooms helping students and teachers? I see lots of parents sitting in the lobby but I seldom see one in a classroom or on a bus. Just sayin.
Typo in last line of 8:47
. Somerset has the highest suspension rate in the state. My mistake!
Put the kids name on here and we will take it up with the parents.
Not all principals are laid back larrys. My child goes to Greenwood in Princess Anne. He was being bullied on his school bus. I went to principal the next morning to talk to her about it by the end of the day when i went to school to pick my child up the child that was bullying my child came up to the both of us and apologized. That meant a lot to my child. She was also kicked off the bus. She was not suspended but the bullying my child took was name calling. The child at woodson i believe should be arrested and have the key thrown away.
Bus drivers can only do so much! that's why there needs to be a bus aid on them. I have kids in that school and on that bus, and the driver does all he can do.
When the school gives out awards just for NOT getting sent to the office for an entire marking period, you understand how coddled the problem kids are in this school system.Unreal! My kid has had things stolen in KINDERGARTEN!What normal kindergartners steal and scheme and curse like a sailor?
Woodson needs new administration, starting with the principal!
@9:10 and 8:47. Sounds like a bunch of bureaucratic bull to me. Teachers in these schools hands are tied by administration. They sell their agenda to the teachers while "high flyers" constantly disrupt education and set the bar for students who teeter on the edge of being behavior issues. When will those in charge say that school is a place for education. If your not on board then find somewhere else to waste the day. 95% of the students in Somerset county are good kids. The 5% who r constantly disrupting do so every year consistently. Wouldn't scores for the majority's increase if the minority weren't getting the class off task and wasting teacher's valuable time and energy in the classroom? Try stringing together a conversation with someone and having someone else interrupt every few seconds or so.
I hate to break it to everybody but it's not woodson, or somerset county, it's any public school in the state of md. Teachers and drivers can only write students up and send them to office. The office can only hand out very few suspensions or the superintendent will say that the school has discipline problems. If the county has too many suspensions then the state looks at the numbers and rather than realizing that discipline is great because the problems are being weeded out, they say that we must have bad schools because people are getting suspended. The best solution to the problem is already in place. The alternative school in maryland is the solution to the problem but they say they can only handle a few students at a time. Rather than giving problem students a vacation(suspension). They need to be sent to the alternative school where they should be required to go to school until 6pm under the supervision of the toughest displinarian teachers that we have. Problem solved

9:10 Miles and the board had 12 or more people signed up to mentor kids. I don't think they have let either one of them mentor anyone yet. They don't want help. Put the brat off the bus.
So it's okay for the good kids to be in danger to attempt to turn the violent offender into a worker bee? These kids should be removed for the safety of the student body. How is a violent repeat offenders life more important than a well behaved child? Explain that? Yeah maybe you shouldn't be working in a school if you are willing to put hundreds of kids at risk! That's sickening! So let's just let out all the felons! Empty the prisons! We need them to be productive! Who cares if they rape, murder and pillage!
In order to speak of such wonderful qualities about woodson, they would first have to exist. I will say I know a few really great teachers there, unfortunately the principal, and vice principals cancel that out ten fold
Lawsuits! You all are begging for lawsuits putting our kids at risk! Can you please name me the bullying rules? Does a kid have to be killed to realize that these kids are more important than a test? Do everyone a favor, if you work with kids, quit. You're in the wrong business!
It was said by numerous staff at the school it was for testing, grants, and reputation that everyone is having such issues with kids not being held responsible for their actions. They might as well drop them off to eci because with the school teaching them those values that's exactly where they are headed!
I appreciate the comments letting me know who the child is in question but I am not going to put their name on my site. They are a child with behavioral issues that needs to be dealt with privately before they hurt someone badly
Put that disruptive child off the bus and let the parents be responsible for his transportation. Aren't parents fined or worse if their child is absent for so many days? Seems to me that would motivate the parents to be sure the child got to school. There is no way I could keep a bus on the road and watch the students at the same time. My hat is off to the bus drivers. I guess we don't have reform schools any more.
I think it horrible children have to go through this. I feel the child responsible should be sent to an,alternative school. I know for sure at my neohews school in princessanne several students were sent to alternative school for less tgen this situation. 3 days suspension for such a violent act is ludacris. I think the principle should be doing more
The parents of the victim should file a complaint with the State Attorney, they should file a civil suit against the parents who are legally responsible for their childs actions and behavior, and they should sue the Somerset County Board of Education. There is a duty to protect children from the time they enter a school bus until they return home. This is absolutely shameful.
I am assuming this post is to raise awareness about bullying. However, some of these comments seem bullying themselves! Mostly the comment about throwing a $50 at a older kid to beat said bully?..i am assuming they are an adult? sounds like a bully as well.
My child is in first grade and her teacher tells them not to taddle on children unless they are hurt or bleeding... how far do these kids have to go before someone takes a stand... bullying goes far beyond physical abuse... this school wants to preach it but not teach it! What kind of teacher tells a student not to bother them at recess because they are chatting with other teachers meanwhile my daughter and niece are getting picked on and bullied!
Public schools in Maryland are the most liberal-run in the country.Indoctrination starts early.I only wish there were affordable private school alternatives in the area.Perhaps someday we will have vouchers.....then public schools would be forced to tighten down.
As far as Woodson ES goes, they have top-notch dedicated teachers in my opinion but are very lax in other areas, mainly administrative. They do not like it when you report bullying because it means they may have to "offend someone" and suggest they actually do their job as a parent and correct their kid.
If that description is even half of what happened to the other child..then the punishment was not nearly severe enough. I imagine I would lose control if that were my child. The Parents have every right to view the video of the attack on their child. Legal representation to obtain access to the video would be my first step. More likely than not, Legal representation for myself and my reaction would probably be needed next. If my own child committed this acrt against another, I would be horrified and would take action immediately. He would be homeschooled, MADE to receive treatment, and it would be one LONG HARD lesson for him. No outside play, no tv, video games, phone..NOTHING. A bed 3 meals and alot of work. Thats it. But then I imagine social services would step in and say i was being inhumane. So be it!
My understanding is that the 2 children that are involved are both white. I bet the NAACP won't be at the side of the mother of the beaten child tonight at the board meeting!!!!!
All the more reason for bus aides for younger children(elementary). The driver can't drive a huge bus safely AND watch the kids like a hawk.
Do you know what the NAACP stands for? NATIONAL ADVANCEMENT ASSOCIATION FOR COLORED PEOPLE. What color are you?

No, I'm not a bully...far from it, but I guarantee my method would stop this child from bullying loong before the school board's would.
As stated previously, (and this not meant to sound like a scapegoat) the administration can only do what the district, state, and federal requirements allow them to do. No child should EVER have to endure anything like that.
But what good does it to do to turn that kid (who did the beating) onto the streets, where obviously this behavior was learned to begin with, when instead, he should be in an alternative center recieving STRICTLY scheduled instruction, counselling, WORK and making restitution. Sadly however, funds run short for those types of badly needed programs. They are often much "softer" than they should be and they are restricted to only a few students at a time from each district (or within a district, if that district is fortunate enough to have such a program).
The admins at Woodson do the best they can with what resources and requirements (and leeway within those requirements) they have been given. These policies are not isolated to Woodson - or to Somerset County for that matter. Thanks to beaurocrats with no educational background making decisions about our schools and taking control out of the hands of the locals, we have policies like what we see with the rewards and reluctance to discipline.
Bottom line, in a situation like this, there is, in fact, only so much the school can do on the punishment (re-active) end. It has been put into the hands of JJ, where it needs to be. (The punishments within JJ are another whole topic for another time...)
On the preventative end of the issue, the school does a lot...with the 7 HOURS A DAY they have with these kids...CHILDREN that go home and spend the bulk of the other 17 hours ALONE or being told to get the f. somewhere instead being told "i love you"...hanging out in the projects with the same "adults" who not long ago were beating each other to a pulp on YouTube...CHILDREN who are 10 years old and younger watching their even younger siblings because they don't know where their mom is...etc. These are the same kids that when the school tries to call home for a problem, the parent can't be reached because they have spent their money on "other things" rather than their phone bill (or minutes for their cell phones). If the parent IS reached, they turn it into the teacher's fault and send the message to their kid that what he/she did wasn't wrong at all. Or they talk a good game in front of the teacher/principal, but laugh about it and brush it off as soon as they walk out the door.
Don't get me wrong...no one is trying to take the attacker's side or justify his actions. Impossible. But you have to remember: 1.CHILDREN model the behavior they see; 2.there is only so much that the school can do with 7 HOURS A DAY. We, as a society, are so far removed from personal responsibility and responsibility to our neighbors all because we have become conditioned to "mind our own business" and to expect the government (and government entities like schools) to handle everything for us.
There is so much "accountability" placed on the schools to "perform" to certain standards (test scores, attendance, discipline, etc.) yet there is LITTLE TO NO ACCOUNTABILITY PLACED ON THE PARENTS to "perform" their responsibilities.
My heart goes out to the victim and his parents. But it is high time people were made to stand up and be held accountable for their kids.
AMEN TO JL. You couldn't have made it any plainer than that. The school system gets the blame for everything. Children(the little ones) are out in the streets all time of nights. I have seen it for myself. They be out cussing like sailors in and out of school. Some parents don't come out to the school until their child gets into trouble. You can't tell me that if a child cusses an adult out in school that they don't do the same at HOME! (Yes they do)! Parents can't do a thing with them at home but don't want the teachers or administrators to correct them at school. How can a teacher teach when there are so many disrespectful and disruptive students in a class. It's unbelievable. I could go on and on. If the child did what everyone is saying, then there should be some type of punishment. PARENTS, take control of your children. Don't let them rule you. Parents, teachers and adminstrators need to work together. All the negative need to stop! It's time to get it together!
JL....Do not mention the infamous "projects" in a comment or you will be blasted as a "racist" even though you did not once mention race. The stupidity in this town amazes me.
9:03 last I checked colored was all colors of the rainbow!!! However I bet the NAACP will break the doors down if D Walters faces a punishment for this or if the family off the abused attempts to sue Miles and the BOE. And you wonder why we have racisum in this community.
