If you want to know what the dictionary definition of what a community is supposed to be then you don't need to look any further than Somerset County. What a small group of dedicated people did to make their beach usable again was amazing and something you would never see in the City. Salisbury has lost that community feel as it really has become a transient City with few staying for any length of time which kills any kind of community feel.
The residents in Somerset all either went to School together, knew each other growing up or their Parents were friends growing up, so when they have events like the Beach ribbon cutting everyone knows everyone just about. I was at the Salisbury Festival and other than politicians and Police Officers I knew all I saw were strangers. I think that has alot to do with the lack of Downtown support because the people that remember how great our Plaza was are an older generation now that have left the battle for the young who have no emotional connection to it.

That community mentality of which you speak also is a great crime deterrant.
I was just having the conversation today. I moved to this area eight years ago. I am amazed that Salisbury has a fine university that bears its name and the city doesn't do much to embrace the university. For instance, the men's lacrosse team just won their 10th national championship this past Sunday. This should result in a great amount of community pride and not just school pride. They won the national championship last year two and I don't recall reading or hearing anything the City did to celebrate the victory.
Salisbury has a major ship building facility. The facility just completed building a magnificent paddle wheel boat named The Queen of the Mississippi and will call New Orleans home. Other than an article in The Daily Times, the City did zero to celebrate the completion of this fine vessel. It left the shipbuilding yard last week, probably for its new home. No send off, nothing.
This place doesn't have a sense of community because no one in power does anything to nurture it.
This past Saturday Sheriff Bobby Jones was on the front page of the Daily Times Newspaper crying the blues.Sheriff Jones stated that he didn't know what he was going to do and that he might lose everything. Maybe Sheriff Jones should of thought about all of this before he decided to violate the law and unlawfully terminate Deputy Troy Durham for reporting serious police misconduct and cover up to the public. Sheriff Jones" unlawful actions caused Deputy Durham to lose a 20 year law enforcement career and lose everything that he had. JT is right Sheriff Jones should step down for the good of our community.
7:29 pm Sheriff Bobby Jones can thank retired Capt. Billy Joe Lewis aka Uncle Billy Joe, also known as Fuzzy from his employment with the Salisbury Police Dept for the situation that he now faces in our community. Uncle Billy Joe is kicked back on Dividing Creek Rd in Pocomoke, enjoying his fat retirement that Sheriff Bobby Jones signed off on, when this case first went public in 2008. Sheriff Bobby Jones knew right from wrong and now wants our community to feel sorry for him and to bail him out of this mess.Shame on you Sheriff Bobby Jones! When you look into the mirror each day,the person that you see looking back at you,is the person that you can blame and thank each day for putting you in this mess, not our community.
Crisfield is a great little town, with very little crime, people come together when someone is in need.
I think it's great what Billy Jo and all the people who came together to revitalize our local Brick Kiln beach , but remember way back when a couple of other ladies, Patty Tawes and Michelle Hinman did the same thing? They painted and put in man hours , sweated and raised monies to fix up the bathrooms , the beach and put up nets so the sea-nettles would stay away and then the beach was forgotten and the bathrooms were used for things unknown along with beer bottles and paraphanalia along the beach and in the water, so it could no longer be used safely and then it became a thing of the past. I just hope this time after all that has been done to make our only accessable beach by car people will take care of it and let it be something families can use once again. Thank You Billie and all your helpers !
Michelle and Patting did a great job, I think the county was involved with the beach at the time and the county pulled the money plug for the beach. The City, American Legion and the whole town is involved with this project now and everyone is working for the same goal.
I hope that there is a regular beach patrol to make sure undesirables are not vandalizing anything or using the restrooms and picnic tables for sex and whatever else they might want to do.The beach is beautiful now and an asset to the town.I was there last weekend and could not get over how nice it was.
