downtownDear 3rd Friday Fans,
"May Flowers" is the theme for the May 3rd Friday celebration in Downtown Salisbury as shops and galleries stay open late and artists and musicians gather in the Arts and Entertainment District in a "street fair' setting to showcase their talents. The fun begins on May 20th at 5:30 p.m. with participants displaying balloons at their front entrances.

The featured musicians for the evening are Josh Pryor and J. Guy and Carter.  The featured visual artist is Yhate, who has captured the imagination of the Eastern Shore community with compelling graphic designs.

The Government Office Building stage and surrounding area will feature gospel music, praise dancers, poetry readings, face painting, free blood pressure screenings, and an array of information booths presented by Serenity's Unique Boutique and  Kids Roc Organization.

Celebrate 3rd Friday - a perfect chance to find out what's happening in Downtown Salisbury! For more info: 3rdFridaySby@gmail.com or visit 3rdFridaySby.com.
Featured Artist

YHateThe creative endeavors of Yhate aren't something you're likely to find on the walls of a traditional art gallery. If your not paying attention, you might walk right over it. Inspired by urban street art, you could say that the work of Yhate is a more natural form of expression and public display. In this case however, mother nature does all the work of removing the artwork within hours or days of it's installation. Perhaps the most notable example of these creations can be found in Yhate's series entitled "Nature Art". Using only elements found in nature, items such as leaves, stones and flowers are gathered and meticulously placed in walk ways and nature trails. When completed, these artistic creations are left behind to be discovered by passing pedestrians. Yhate is also known for using stencils and mud to create impressive images and faces on the sidewalks of downtown Salisbury during recent Third Friday events.

If you've missed the chance to see these short lived creations in the past, don't worry, thanks to the digital technology you're able to view these and more at www.yhate.org.

POLLITT WITHDRAWS MAINTENANCE OF

EFFORT WAIVER REQUEST

For Immediate Release

Salisbury, MD

May 20, 2011

Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., announced today that he has notified the Maryland State Board of Education (attached letter) that he is withdrawing the county’s application for a waiver of the Maintenance of Effort (M.O.E.) standard for funding public education for Fiscal Year 2012. Pollitt was to lead a Wicomico County delegation to Baltimore to appeal to the State Board for a waiver on May 24, but the withdrawal negates that presentation. Wicomico is the last of the six counties that initially filed for the waiver to take this action.

In a letter to the State Board, Pollitt said, “Withdrawal of the requested waiver does not indicate that Wicomico County will reach the M.O.E. level of funding in the next fiscal year. In fact, it will not.”

Under normal circumstances, if a county funds its local school system to the level designated as Maintenance of Effort, it receives millions of dollars in new State aid. However, as a reflection of the current state of the economy, no additional State funds are at risk next year for failure to meet M.O.E.

Pollitt noted that there is currently a legal challenge involving the Montgomery County Board of Education and their county government where the Board claims that M.O.E. is mandatory upon the counties and the only way to avoid funding M.O.E. is through the waiver process. “We, along with the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo), are watching that case with a great deal of concern as a ruling favorable to the Montgomery Board could be devastating to county fiscal policy. I believe the major risk to failing M.O.E. is the loss of additional State money. With no new money at stake, the exercise is moot”.

Recently, the Wicomico County Board of Education, by a tie vote, declined to endorse the county’s application for the waiver. Pollitt noted without the support of the local educational community, gaining the waiver would have been unlikely. Pollitt was successful in receiving a waiver last year but then had the support of the local school system.

Pollitt concluded, “providing adequate funding for the superior education of our young people is the most serious challenge we face. While I deeply believe that most Maryland jurisdictions have a strong commitment to do the right thing for our children; the precarious state of the economy, further exacerbated by an antiquated system of public school funding, points to a troubled future for local school funding and I have called on the State Board of Education to join with MACo, local boards of education and the Maryland General Assembly to work vigorously to develop a better plan for funding public schools.”

What Happened At The Airport Yesterday?

I heard about the incident at the airport yesterday morning but since nothing was found and things went back to normal I didn't figure it was worthy a post since it happened before I was even awake, but today the article on WBOC has me cracking up.

This was the quote "When TSA arrived at the airport, something just didn't look right," airport manager Bob Bryant said. "They contacted me and as a precaution we evacuated the terminal building."

What didn't look right? is the picture above an accurate portrayal..rofl . I'm not busting on them as I know they are just keeping us safe but that just cracked me up to have no further info than something didn't look right.

Terry Cohen Brings In The Shaft For Urban Salisbury

Well Terry Cohen and Debbie Campbell have brought in the heavy hitter for Urban Salisbury..the Shaft. Terry and Debbie don't think they should get the funding to continue finding ways to bring the Downtown Plaza to life. Urban Salisbury got the awesome 3rd Friday which is tonight together along with other events in the art district that have shown that Downtown can rock.

The thing that amuses me is Terry stating in the paper today she is looking at all things in the budget for areas to cut, but guess what she still wants her health insurance. Nice home, boat and life but wants to give Urban Salisbury the shaft so they can't revitalize downtown for future generations.
