More Salisbury Crime Stat Manipulation
Look I am in 100% behind the SPD and what they do, this is aimed toward Jim and the crime numbers he likes to talk about. These two different charts on the SPD crime page show the discrepancies. Notice at the top it shows no murders from and catch the date 1/18/11 - 4/17/11 so if any crimes occurred before Jan 18 they are not included. The bottom chart shows 1 Homicide mentioned that isn't at the top. Compare these numbers yourself they don't match up.
This seems like more of Jim trying to make it look like he was masterful in wanting to get rid of Chief Webster and that the Safe Streets idea is working. I'm not saying it isn't having some impact, but not on the level Jim wants you to believe. Let us remember the Centre and WalMart north have reportedly been asked to not report theft unless it reaches a certain financial threshold set by Jim.
The Lord's Prayer My View
I allowed open debate on this issue last week, so now its time for me to share my opinion on the matter. This is actually a small scale issue in a much bigger debate happening across the country, and that is the debate of separation of Church and State.
We all have our differing views on exactly what that means, and what the true intent of Thomas Jefferson was when that was written. I have always believed that it meant the State should not be allowed to force people to practice a certain religion, and keep them from practicing what it is they choose. This was why many fled England (Pilgrims)to avoid religious Persecution in the Catholic vs Protestant battles.
I do not believe saying the Lord's Prayer before a City Council meeting is violating any of those laws. Nobody is forcing anyone in attendance at the meeting to say the Prayer so I really don't see what the big deal is. Laura had commented to me that it was kind of embarassing for people to be shown on PAC14 not bowing their heads in prayer. I agree with her on this point and believe to solve the problem PAC14 could simply zoom in on the Flag or the City seal during this time.
The main issue of course is that our current City Council President is Jewish, which brought up this discussion in the first place. The thing is I can tell you in all the years I have gone to meetings Terry has always just stood there not saying the prayer, but to be fair I understand as President she must ask people to rise and say the Prayer and Pledge. This is another issue I think has a simple solution. If Terry doesn't feel comfortable asking, then allow Brenda Colgrove to do so.
I just don't want to see these drastic measures be taken when small little adjustments are all that is needed to solve the problem. In closing in my Opinion the Prayer should stay.
