Somerset County Sheriff's Deputies Fixing Bobby Jones Signs on the Clock?

I have received numerous emails from people in Somerset County who say they have seen Somerset County Sheriff's Deputies in County Vehicles and uniform out fixing Bobby Jones signs along the highway. I have got to believe that these guys are just scared of Bobby because they honestly should know better than that.

NEWS RELEASE

Desmond Omar Croswell, age 21 of Pocomoke City, was convicted on August 12 of the crime of robbery. On April 2, 2010 Croswell approached a female victim on 2nd Street in Pocomoke city and grabbed her purse which was on her arm and attempted to take it without the victim’s permission. As the victim tried to stop Croswell from taking her purse, he began to pull her towards the left side of the residence. Croswell eventually knocked the victim to the ground and began to kick her in the chest and head, at which point the victim released the purse. The victim has known Croswell most of his life and so she was able to identify him to the police.

The Honorable Richard R. Bloxom sentenced Croswell to 7 years in prison and ordered him to pay restitution of $150 to the victim. Croswell had a minor criminal record.

Joint City/County Police Force Talks

Last night the young republicans club meeting the topic of the joint city/county police force was brought up as a question to the candidates to see if they supported the idea. My feelings are that it won't happen as the City would have far more to lose in this deal and would never agree to it. Municipalities all over the Country have their own Police force and a Sheriff so I don't really see what the point would be to actually further the study into the feasibility of this.

The system we have now works, it's just that when economic issue arise people are quick to look into duplicating services. I agree the tax differential is needed but joint police just isn't viable in my opinion

Joel Todd: Prosecutors can deter crime before it occurs

I became a prosecutor in 1985. The reason I chose this profession was simple: I wanted to put the bad guys away. During my career I've done my best to convict criminals and I'm proud of that. I'm also proud that in my 25 years of experience I've learned there's much more to public safety than punishing the guilty. There are proactive measures that can keep crime from occurring in the first place.

I have seen convicted drug dealers put behind bars, only to be replaced by new dealers on the streets. To try to stop this revolving door, I started a community prosecution effort in 2008 called Take Pride in Berlin, based on a program from the Center for Crime Prevention and Control at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

It starts with good, old-fashioned police work. Using objective data, police identify a troubled area with open-air drug dealing. Undercover police covertly record drug deals. A major arrest round-up of the open-air drug dealers is made.

But that's only the beginning. To keep new dealers from coming to the neighborhood, police and prosecutors remain involved, earning the trust of the community. Residents become more involved and continue to help police by reporting suspicious activity.

This effort has been a success that wouldn't have been possible without the assistance of Mayor Gee Williams, Berlin and Ocean City police, Maryland State Police, Worcester County Sheriff's deputies and, of course, the community. Children can safely walk now the same streets that dealers once occupied. Residents are no longer afraid of the potential violence that often accompanies open-air dealing.

Earlier this month, a car approached some young men in Berlin; the driver was looking for drugs. Those young men reported the incident to Berlin police and the suspect was later arrested for possession of drugs.

The program has attracted interest from police agencies across the country. Last year I was invited to Nashville to share the success of Take Pride in Berlin with police and prosecutors from across the country. Recently I met with Pocomoke City residents interested their own Take Pride program.

As a prosecutor, it is my duty to convict the guilty.

As a public servant, it is my obligation to deter crime whenever possible.

As a Worcester County native with children and grandchildren who live here, keeping the community safe for everyone is a personal commitment.

Will The Paving On Philadelphia Avenue Help With The Flooding On 13?

Anyone that has ever traveled 13 during torrential rains like we had this morning knows that 13 in the area of Philadelphia is sometimes almost impassable unless you have a boat. I hope the paving they have been working on took this issue into consideration and allowed more runoff.

Hickman and Powell Camps At War

The verbal bantering between the Dan Powell and Kristy Hickmn camps has been increasing each day since John Phoebus made his announcement of support for Hickman. It seems that Kristy Hickmans camp keep wanting to bring up Dan Powell 6 years ago being given Thomas Leggs as a client while working for another law firm, and The Powell camp are pointing out something much more recent the Melissa Morris case.

That case involves The Somerset County State's Attorney's Office under the leadership of Kristy Hickman allowing Jason Joerell Phillips to plea out of a First Degree Assault with the use of a Handgun during a Felony/Violent Crime charge down to Second Degree Assault which allowed him to be on the streets the night he beat Melissa which ultimately claimed her life a bit later.

Does Bobby Jones Carry A Gun Or A Radio??

I have heard from many people in Somerset that tell me Bobby Jones doesn't carry a firearm or a radio with him when he is on the road. I have heard he actually hasn't had one on him in around 10 years. I want you to think about the liability this could be in the following situation.

Bobby Jones is doing his usual routine of playing keno at goose creek, someone comes in to rob the store and think of what could happen. A Sheriff sitting in a store being robbed with no gun or radio how do you think that's going to turn out? This is why the voters in Somerset are ready for Bobby to go off into the sunset and enjoy retirement, so we can have an actual law enforcement officer running the Sheriff's Department.

Jim Ireton Gets His New Fire Chief

Yes it's Fire Marshall Bill from In Living Color. I figured with Jim's love of the 80's and the incessant searches which include the newest for 5 outside resumes that this would just solve all problems. Jim could be nostalgic and run the Fire Department and yet blame it all on Fire Marshall Bill. Maybe the next Mayor will actually make the decision for him.
