July has flown by

I cannot believe that July is getting ready to come to an end, seems like just yesterday we were at the filing deadline for campaigns. I never remember time going by as quickly as it does now, maybe it's because so much is going on around our little place on the Earth.

Will Albero Dare Show Tonight at the AFP Meeting?

Remember what happened last time. Yellow Bellied Joe chickened out because he was afraid of getting thrown into the Wicomico

No More Brotherhood among Firefighters? Repost

Is there no Brotherhood among the Brave men and women in the Salisbury Fire Department anymore? Each time that whoever  it is writes an email or comment to sbynews bitching or moaning about something that is going on they are betraying the brotherhood of friendship that is supposed to exist between people that put their lives on the line each day. How about being a man or woman and going to the person you are questioning and speak to them personally instead of running to Joe Albero with your problems? The person or persons that do such behavior are a disgrace to the Firefighter profession and are cowards.

Please think about what you are doing and stop causing a divide in these departments and think of the brotherhood that is supposed to exist.

Julie Brewington On The Issues

My main concern is that our government in Maryland is out of control and there are not enough true conservative voices in Annapolis to fight for the good people of the Eastern Shore. The time is over for the "Go along to get a long" Republicans and it is time to change the balance of power of the liberal majority. That is what got us into this two billion dollar budget gap. I will not be a "Go along to get a long" Republican; as evidence of my involvement in the Tea party and the very fact I am running against two establishment Republicans. I am a true conservative and I will fight for the people of 38A.

The issues that concern me the most are as follows:

The Maryland state government is stealing revenue from local Maryland counties including Somerset and Wicomico via the gas tax and and threatens to "borrow" from our revenue income taxes. I pledge to be a strong voice of opposition of balancing the state budget on the backs of local county tax payers.

Somerset and Wicomico counties pay some of the highest income revenue tax in the state. I will advocate for a reduction in these tax rates in order to attract more people and small business owners to our district.

Our farmers and waterman are under assault from our state government and I pledge to be a champion and advocate for these very important industries that keep the Eastern Shore's economy viable.

Maryland has one of the highest business taxes in the entire country. As your representative, I will not relent in fighting for a business friendly environment, so that all may have an opportunity for employment and a chance to prosper.

I will advocate to pull back the 6% sales tax, under Governor O'Malley, and bring it back to the 5%, we have long been accustomed to. There is not a revenue problem in Maryland, but a spending problem.

We are in for some hard economic times both personally and in this state. We can not allow for ANY tax increases, which are inevitable if we keep doing what we have always done, and if we elect the same old guard.

I am a believer in legal immigration and that our state and our country benefits when people come to this country who want to assimilate as Americans. The federal government needs to do their job to secure the borders. If they refuse to do so, I support state legislation to deal with the issues of illegal immigration in Maryland.

I am pro-second amendment and will advocate for conceal carry laws in Maryland, as well as all legal gun owners rights..

I solidly believe the constitution is for restrictive rights of the government, not to restrict the rights of individuals. It is this mind set that I will use to guide my votes in Annapolis for Maryland.

Finally, I pledge to you that I will work with all levels of government, city, county, state, as well as federal to achieve these goals for the citizens of Somerset and Wicomico counties. I will not stand down and I will not give in, for us. I will be actively involved with the district and stand behind the needs and demands of the people of Somerset and Wicomico. My door will always be open to my district.

This is my promise and my solemn word.

Please support me on September 14th!

Will Jim Ireton's Crime Initiative Work?

With the big news that Jim Ireton is set to unveil his crime initiatives through his safe streets program, the question will undoubtedly be will it actually work?

The only ideas that I know Jim is big on are the substations which I will say are a big waste of time and money. Look I hope it does work, but honestly all the studies have shown they are a thing of the late 80's early 90's. Drug Dealers, Prostitutes and other unsavory souls are not going to leave Salisbury because a substation opens in the neighborhood they are currently hanging in, they will just move to another neighborhood . The mobile command center is the way to go and I at least hope that this program will remain on the streets as it allows the Police to respond quickly to problem areas.

Look at New York, they have precincts all over but they still have a ton of crime. This is because criminals are mobile, and police unfortunately are always going to be a responsive force and  not an offensive one. Yes you get cases where Police happen upon a crime in progress or get to the scene before it is over but there is way too much area and far few cops to be everywhere at all times. I also hope that Jim got several actual Police Officers to give their input on what would work, and yes I know it is ultimately up to him but I hope he took a look at all avenues before he makes this announcement.

AFP Meeting Tonight

tonight 7pm-8pm at Brew River

Get To Know Mike Calpino

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania. My parents were, and continue to be, great examples of marriage and character. My childhood was pretty normal although I was never part of any “in” group. In high school my sport was wrestling. I went to college as a religion major and eventually received a Master of Arts degree in Religion from Liberty University in Virginia. After college I met my wife, Kelly, while roller skating. We were married in 1990. We have three children, Rachael, Will and Rebekkah whom we home school.

We moved to Maryland in 2004 to build a boat large enough to live aboard. We soon fell in love with the West Side and the people who make it such a special place. My family has been intimately involved in the West Side Community Center where I serve on the advisory board and my eldest daughter serves as Youth Council President. In addition to religion and philosophy, politics has always been a passion of mine. I grew up admiring Ronald Reagan and entered my first political race as a Republican in 2002. Long before that, however, I was becoming less and less enamored with the two major parties. As a great admirer of the founding fathers and Thomas Jefferson in particular, it was obvious that both parties had betrayed their vision at all levels of government. The ideas of small, limited government that maximizes individual freedom and expects individual responsibility have fallen by the wayside.

Within the last year, however, as the unsustainability of our insane spending and over regulation have become obvious to many, the TEA parties were born. I have been an enthusiastic participant in this movement which seeks common sense limited government at all levels. It is a desire to bring these values to our county government that has motivated me to run for county council. The way governments at all levels have been run for the last eighty years will not work any more, we do not have the money. The products of our labor should remain with ‘we the people’ and should not be confiscated by government to be redistributed. As Thomas Jefferson and many of the other founders said, the purpose of government is to secure our God given rights. The primary purpose of local government is public safety and the maintenance of infrastructure. It is this prioritization and not a desire for a government to be all things to all people and do all things for all people that will return power and wealth to the citizens, to you and I.

Public service should be exactly that, public service. Elected office should not be a career and public workers should not receive pay and benefits out of line with the taxpayers who make their employment possible. Common sense, new vision and principled leadership independent of political party or special interests is what we need and what I plan to bring to Wicomico County if I am privileged to serve.

Can Davis Ruark Win?

Well we now know the three candidates for Wicomico County State's Attorney, the question is does Davis Ruark already have it in the bag?

When Sam Vincent announced he was running alot of people were ready for new leadership, but with the tragic loss of Sam it pretty much looked like Davis would run unopposed again. Seth Mitchell will challenge him on the Democratic front, with Matt Maciarello waiting for him in the general election. I think Davis will have no problem against Seth, but will the people who were ready for Sam to take over get behind Matt?

I'm not sure I know the answer for this. There has been alot of great things said about Matt and his reputation, but unlike Sam you get into some unknowns. Do I think Matt can do the job? absolutely without a doubt. The unknowns I am referring to are that alot of people are not that familair with him throughout Wicomico County, and this may make some rethink about voting for him and go with the known in Davis.

Look I have been critical of Davis at times, but he is a very nice guy and is one hell of a trial attorney which nobody can deny. I do agree with Matt and others that I wish it didn't come down to personal matters that affect the outcome of the race but I think at this point it will be inevitable that some people will walk into the voting booth and have those things on their minds.

New site found for veterans shelter

Greg Latshaw has a very good article in the paper today which can be read by clicking here which talks about the new location for veterans shelter and the issue they are still having with the Collins street center.

I still get disgusted each time I think about the way that Terry Cohen and Debbie Campbell have done everything in their power to keep the veterans from having their home on Collins street. It is far more important to help our brave men and women who are having issues after serving their country than worrying about zoning issues. This goes right back to my article about the homeless I made a few weeks back and the fact that it is getting worse. I hope that a compromise can be made for the Collins street address, and I am so glad to see they at least have a place to start now.
