He has a good strong personality which I respect. Matt is a very down to earth guy, who feels his reputation is the most important thing, and felt his supporters were going down a road with Davis he did not feel comfortable with.
This guy really could and should be the future of the State's Attorney's Office, I was that impressed with him.
We talked about the blogs and he told me that we (salisbury grinch and sbynews) have to be careful what we allow because people have families. I told him I understood what he was saying but that it isn't really a personal attack since the DWI was a public issue that called into Davis's leadership skills, but I could tell by the conviction in his voice that he wants to run a fair race with no mentions of that and just challenge Davis on law.
It was to this end and the fact that I was very impressed with Matt that I made him an offer to ponder while he gets away with his family this weekend to think. I told him if it will keep him in the race I give him my word I will not allow any personal attacks or comments on Davis. This decision is based on what is right for the voters who deserve a chance to vote for as many people as possible and hear what others have to say. Don't be to harsh on the guy because I can tell you he really is a good guy who believes in old fashioned civil minded debates, which is what I wish could come back anyway. His passion about this whole thing has made him be rash at times with his quick decision to announce a withdraw and then to reconsider, but I am telling you don't count this guy out. Even if he decides against running this time I still think he could be the future of that office.
