Salisbury 1936 Legislation Part 1

I read over some of the Legislation that Jim Ireton wants to pass and stopped at the first part regarding Non Conforming Properties. This entire section is again going back to the 1936 zoning laws and the woes of society turning the single family homes into multifamily units.

Look I'm going to be fair here and discuss the issues and not the personalities of the parties involved so save the comments for discussion of issues only. If passed all multifamily units must register with the City and be inspected and made to be compliant with City zoning standards. This will allow The City to determine which ones are legal and illegal conversations, the problem is even if they are legal if this bill is passed Jim is giving them 10 years to get out before it becomes illegal.

Look I know in Jim's eyes he is looking out for the home owners in those areas but this certainly screams of attacking the less fortunate among us. Take an example of a family that has just moved into a legal multifamily conversion and be looking at the news and drama going on knowing if this bill passes a clock will start on you instantly and you will be uprooted it's only a matter of time. I agree that most renters don't stay in the same place for 10 years but even if 1 family may it is a terrible thing to do to them.

I also am not a big fan of the Government stepping in and telling people what they can and can't do with their own property.

Right on!!!

The city can say you can't do something in the future.
But, they have no right to say they're putting you out of business in a certain amount of time, even though what you're doing was perfectly legal when you started doing it. They got away with trampling all over property rights with that 4-2 mess, that would have been ruled unconstitutional if anyone had taken it to court, but they didn't. Now they are taking more property rights away from people who put their life savings into buying a house to live in that has an apartment or two in it that will pay part of the mortgage payment and those high city taxes. All of a sudden the apartments will be illegal and how's a family going to keep paying its mortgage and taxes>
It's a bad bill.
